Servant Evangelism???

Over the past 3 years, God has really shown me that I need to be witnessing and involved in helping others witness about their relationship with Jesus!  There are many ways to share Jesus with people!  Look at Jesus’ life…He was EXCELLENT at sharing how to have eternal life in specific circumstances that wouldn’t have worked with other people.  Contrast His conversation with Nicodemus vs. the woman at the well.  I have been reading in a few different places recently about how people should get involved in Servant Evangelism.

There are 2 views of servant evangelism.  The 1st is doing something in a community (free car wash, giving out water/soda, cleaning someone’s yard, etc) with the goal to have conversations about Jesus.  The 2nd is doing the same acts of kindness without sharing about Jesus but still calling it evangelism or witnessing.

I’m not opposed at all to people doing kind things for their community.  I just don’t see how you can call giving someone a water bottle without ever talking to them about Jesus evangelism.  How do they know you did it because of Jesus?  It could have been court ordered community service, or the boy scouts, etc.  Servant evangelism is usually encouraged as an “easy way to start sharing your faith”.  The problem I have with this is that most people who go serve, never talk to the person they are serving!  You can’t be a witness without saying something!   I believe that it is usually an excuse for people who want to say they are witnessing to people but don’t actually want to have say anything about the person they believe in.

Peter & John said it best when they were threatened with punishment for sharing about Jesus when they responded, “”Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:19-20).

If you are madly in love with Jesus, it is going to be something you talk about…ALL THE TIME! It won’t just change the way you live, it is going to be something you can’t help but talk about!

We should be actively serving our communities.  We should even more so be sharing Jesus with our communities…with our lips!  We should be looking for ways to serve & witness to our neighbors, but please don’t call it evangelism if you aren’t going to talk about Jesus.
