Faith in God vs. Fear of possibly sinning

As a youth pastor I talk to and work with a lot of different parents and have done so for years.  I’m not the best, brightest or most experienced by any means.  I have heard the following statements more times than I ever imagined from godly, believing, Christ-following parents that love the Lord and love their kids.

“My son/daughter is a follower, not a leader, so we don’t want them involved in _______.”

“I’m not sure my child is ready to be in the world and in the midst of those students.”

“My job as a parent is to protect my children from the evil influences that are out there.”

If your child hasn’t surrendered his/her life to God, then you should be afraid.

If your child has surrendered his/her life to God, stop living in fear.  Why are Christians so afraid of the possibility of sinning (or their children sinning)?  The God of the Universe, the God who created everything and the God who took the sin of the world upon Himself for us is the God who now dwells inside of every believer!

Christians need to start believing and trusting the God living inside of them and learn to abide in Christ all the time.  We should never run from, hide in fear of or avoid being around sinful people or the possibility of being tempted.  Ephesians 6:11 says that we should “put on the full armor of God so that we stand firm against the schemes of the devil.”  That means as parents & youth workers, our job is to teach our students how to abide in Christ, trust the ONE living & true God and stand firm against anything that might tempt us from pursuing God passionately!

God promised He would protect us (1 Peter 1:6), guide us (Ezekiel 36:27), help/comfort us (John 14:26), complete us (Philippians 1:6), convict us (John 16:8), and teach us (John 14:26).  We have nothing to fear while we are abiding in Christ…NOTHING!

Romans 8:11 “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”

2 Timothy 1:7 “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

May we live by faith. Not in fear of what might happen but in confidence in our God who dwells within us because nothing can stop Him!
