Mission Trip Review – Trinidad & Walsenburg – Part 1

We returned from a 4 day mission trip to Trinidad & Walsenburg, CO 10 days ago. Our team consisted of 16 people: 3 adults and 13 students. We served alongside of New Hope Community Church (Walsenburg) and Fisher’s Peak Community Church (Trinidad).

My 2 main goals for our mission trips are: 1) Plant as many seeds in the community we are serving in. 2) Prepare/Equip our students to live “on mission” the rest of their lives by knowing God and making Him known.

We had the time of our lives and were blessed tremendously by being able to serve with these two churches in southern Colorado.

Before I share about how we were able to serve with the churches I wanted share about how we tried to prepare our own hearts before and during the trip. Before we left on our trip the students memorized Colossians 1:27-29 which says,

To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

This passage might be my favorite in all of scripture because it reminds us of our duty on earth to make disciples since God has chosen to save us and put Christ IN us! We do our best to warn everyone we come in contact with but we don’t work in our strength…we work in HIS strength. All of the work we do is ONLY due to the fact that God is working inside of us and enabling us to glorify Him.

Each morning we spent 30 minutes of alone time with our Lord. They could read scripture, pray, memorize more verses, write down what God was showing them, etc. Afterwards, we spent another 90 minutes in small groups studying what the Bible says about the Doctrine of God.

The students also got to memorize 2 other verses each day that coincided with our Bible/Doctrine Study that morning.

Day 1

When You said, “Seek My face,” My heart said to You, “Your face, LORD, I will seek. (Psalm 27:8)

Establish Your word to Your servant, Who is devoted to fearing You. (Psalm 119:38)

Day 2

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6)

He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel. The LORD is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. (Psalm 103:7-8)

Day 3

(I have been) elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ. Grace to you and peace be multiplied. (1 Peter 1:2)

And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. (John 17:3)

Day 4

Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image. (2 Corinthians 3:18)

At the end of our trip they said all of the verses together. From Colossians 1:27-19 through 2 Corinthians 3:18. They did an outstanding job…even those who hadn’t memorized bible verses before. :)
