The Soul Winner – Part 1

I recently finished reading The Soul Winner by Charles Spurgeon. The book was FANTASTIC, AMAZING and incredibly CHALLENGING.

I have compiled a list of of my favorite quotes. There are, however, a great any of them. 7 pages as I typed the in Microsoft Word to be exact.

You can purchase the book on Amazon ($16.99), CBD ($9.99), or Christian Focus Publications (£7.99).

Here is the first batch of quotes:

“The preacher’s work is to throw sinners down in utter helplessness, that they may be compelled to look up to Him who alone can help them.” (The Soul Winner. Pg. 13)

“A true physician only makes incisions in order to effect cures, and a wise minister only excites painful emotions in men’s minds with the distinct object of blessing their souls.” (The Soul Winner. Pg. 16)

“You and I must continue to drive at men’s hearts till they are broken; and then we must keep preaching Christ crucified till their hearts are bound up; and when this is accomplished, we must continue to proclaim the gospel till their whole nature is brought into subjection to the gospel of Christ.” (The Soul Winner. Pg. 16)

“God never clothes men until He has first stripped them, not does He quicken them by the gospel till they are first slain by the law.” (The Soul Winner. Pg. 19)

“Is it any wonder that many converts fall away, when, in fact, they were never taught to exercise faith in Jesus for eternal salvation, but only for temporary conversion?” (The Soul Winner. Pg. 20)

“A man need not take a dozen poisons to destroy his life, one is quite sufficient [referring to sin].” (The Soul Winner. Pg. 23)

“You must have great faith in the Word of God if you are to be winners of souls to those who hear it.” (The Soul Winner. Pg. 40)

“A man who is to be used by God must just believe that what he is going to do is for the glory of God, and he must work from no other motive.” (The Soul Winner. Pg. 45)

Qualifications for Soul-Winning – Godward: 1) Holiness of character. 2) Spiritual life to a high degree. 3) Of humble spirit. 4) A living faith. 5) Thorough earnestness. 6) Great simplicity of heart. 7) A complete surrender of yourself to God. (These were the main points of the whole chapter)

Qualifications for Soul-Winning – Manward: 1) Evident sincerity. 2) Intensity of emotion. 3) Evident love to his hearers. 4) Evident unselfishness. 5) Holiness of character. 6) Seriousness of manner. 7) Great deal of tenderness. (These were the main points of the whole chapter)

“It must be quite clear to your hearers that you have a firm belief in the truths that you are preaching; otherwise, you will never make them believe them. Unless they are convinced, beyond all question, that you do believe these truths yourselves, there will be no efficacy and no force in your preaching. No one must suspect you of proclaiming to others what you do not fully believe in yourself; if it should ever be so, your work will be of no effect. All who listen to you ought to be conscious that you are exercising one of the noblest crafts, and performing one of the most sacred functions that ever fell to the lot of man. If you have only a feeble appreciation of the gospel you profess to deliver, it is impossible for those who hear your proclamation of it to be greatly influenced by it.” (The Soul Winner. Pg. 52)
